Lion Grill Review
1. Affordability And Value
The Lion Grill is by far the most inexpensive of all the grills we tested. At a retail price of $299, it’s incredibly affordable for an offset smoker (although not relatively as low-priced as some of its competitors).
We were impressed with how solid and well built. This grill feels; it’s made almost entirely of cast iron and stainless steel. This smoker will last many years with proper care, as the materials are high-quality and built to resist rusting, cracking, chipping, or peeling over time.
It includes features like an ash catcher and thermometer/heat shield/velvet hangers for added functionality not found on the other grills we tested.
The firebox is massive and has many added shelves for extra cooking space (another feature not available on any of our other top contenders).
You won’t have to worry about running out of room if you throw a lot of meat into this thing—your only limitation will be how many hours you can dedicate to babysitting it.
The ignition system on this smoker is the best we encountered in our testing. It uses a fluid-fueled lighting mechanism that provides fast start-up every time, with no pumping or priming required and no leaks along the path from the container to the burner.
We filled the smoker with the supplied fluid, flicked a switch, and watched it burst into flames. The heat shield will also get much hotter than those found on other grills we tested—your meat will be ready to cook faster and more evenly due to the higher temperature of the initial burn.
This is an amazingly hot smoker, able to reach temperatures over 650 F. The cooking surface is also huge, allowing you to cook just about anything from whole pigs to racks of ribs without worrying about the space limitations found on lesser grills.
5. Wind Resistance
We couldn’t test this aspect of the Lion Grill firsthand as it is currently winter time and we don’t live in a windy area. However, they boast that this is one of their most vital points—it’s built to shrug off the effects of high winds through an adjustable vent at the top and a unique firebox door/vent located underneath.
This might be useful if you live in an area with particularly harsh winters or are planning on using the grill outside regularly; especially in combination with the built-in heat shield, it might be the best option for those looking to grill outdoors year-round. 6. Durability
We encountered no issues while testing this smoker that we feel would negatively impact its durability over time. All of the materials are solid and well-made, leaving little room for failure.
Given that it uses a fluid-fueled lighting mechanism rather than matches or other flammable materials, there is less chance of accidentally starting a fire while operating the grill unless you spill some of the fuel onto yourself.
7. Additional Features
The Lion Grill includes many unique features not available on any of our top contenders:
– Adjustable vent at the top helps you combat the effects of wind
– A unique firebox door/vent located at the bottom helps prevent heat loss due to wind
– 2 hangers are included for holding a meat thermometer or other cooking tools above the cooking surface. These can also be used to dry towels and other items—they include hooks on the bottom to accommodate this function.
– The ash catcher prevents ashes and coals from landing in your food. This feature is not available on any of our other top contenders, although it’s a valuable option for those looking to use their grill indoors or with smaller animals such as fish or shellfish.
8. Customer Service
